The appreciation of nature through the observance of seasons is an important part of the Japanese tea ceremony. Tea preparation, as well as utensils used, change according to season. An iron kettle is placed on a brazier, or furo, in the summer months and on a sunken hearth, or ro, in the winter months. These machined tea caddies are surrounded by a sunburst, representing these two preparation periods. By using seasonally designed caddies, a sense of the seasons changing is felt in the tearoom.
